Customer Support Specialist(Interpreter) Tigrinya & English

Become an Interpreter and play a crucial role in helping people who speak limited English in the UK, like Tigrinya nationals, access essential services such as medical, council, and legal assistance. You'll use telephone and video calls to ensure effective and accurate communication. This job is not only rewarding but will also challenge your quick thinking and language skills.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of a telephone and/or video interpreter is to facilitate effective communication between limited English speakers in the UK and service providers, by accurately translating from the target language to English and vice versa. This ensures that limited English speakers in the UK can access critical services such as medical, council, or legal assistance. Interpreting and communication must be effective and accurate.
This role calls for more than just effective and accurate interpreting and communication—it invites you into the deeply human experience of connecting people across language barriers. It's a uniquely fulfilling position, where your temperament, quick thinking, and linguistic prowess will be put to the test and continuously refined. Here, you will not only translate words but also bridge cultures, emotions, and intentions, making every interaction profoundly meaningful.
In this role you will experience a diverse and varied number of situations in which you might interpret, including but not limited to:
• Medical appointments /Meetings with public officials /Legal matters and Immigration meetings /Social Services Child Protection appointments
• Language Translation: Provide accurate and concise translation of spoken language in real-time during telephone conversations
• Accuracy: Ensure high levels of accuracy in interpreting, avoiding any personal bias or alterations to the original message
• Listening Skills: Exhibit strong listening skills to accurately capture the essence of the conversation and convey it in another language
• Fluency: Demonstrate fluency in both the source and target languages, including industry-specific terminology when needed
• Professionalism: Maintain a professional demeanour at all times, handling difficult or sensitive topics with care.
Work Schedule
2 schedules available:
- Full time - Monday - Friday - 10am - 7pm
- Part Time - Monday - Friday 12pm - 4pm
About you
• Fluency in English and a second language: Essential for accurate and effective interpreting
• Verbal and written communication: Clear and concise communication is vital.
• Active listening and empathy: To understand and effectively relay messages
• Strong interpersonal skills: Necessary for building rapport and trust with clients.
• Team player: Able to work collaboratively with others.
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook: For managing schedules and communication.
• Experience within a customer service / office-based role: Helpful but not mandatory.
• Attention to detail: Ensuring accuracy in interpreting.
• Pro-active and self-motivated: Taking initiative and managing tasks independently.
• Organizes own time effectively: Good time management skills.
• Ability to think on your feet: Handling diverse and varied situations with ease.
• Temperament: Managing challenging and high-pressure scenarios calmly.
To apply for this role you must be able to speak English proficiently (C1). During registration, we will ask you to prove your English language skills by either providing a relevant qualification (e.g. IELTS or CEFR) or we will conduct a language assessment with you.
