About the Position:

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Value Competitiveness team, reporting directly to the Special Initiatives Lead, Electronic Systems.
 

This position is based at our office in Cluj-Napoca.
 

As the Mechanical Engineer (Value Competitiveness) at Marelli, you will be responsible for estimating and optimizing both the cost and design of the main mechanical parts of the Bill of Materials (BOM) for products such as instrument clusters, central and passenger displays, head-up displays, body computers, zone control units, telematics boxes, and more. Your responsibilities will include analyzing customer and system specifications, evaluating mechanical content (including optical components), reviewing assembly cycles (make/buy/resource), and assessing supplier proposals.

You will also define the costs of custom metal and plastic parts and champion cost optimization for mechanical components. You will drive improvements by focusing on materials, design, production tools, and processes, in close collaboration with Product Managers, Engineering, and Manufacturing departments—supporting product development from the initial Request for Quotation (RfQ) phase through to Start of Production (SOP).

Your Responsibilities will be:
  • Estimate the cost of custom parts using specialized tools (Siemens TcPCM), considering raw material prices and manufacturing technology cycles for cost modeling.
  • Generate and evaluate cost reduction ideas across all products mechanical BOM areas, assess technical feasibility, and define actions to implement changes.
  • Propose redesigns for parts or systems to achieve cost-effective BOM reductions.
  • Support the Offer Team in identifying optimal materials, technical, and technological solutions during RFI/RFQ phases, and collaborate with mechanical engineering specialists to estimate component costs (plastic, metal).
  • Participate in core teams for new projects, identifying "design to cost" improvements in mechanical components during the design phase.
  • Assess and apply lessons learned from benchmarking, supplier proposals, and other sources for potential cost optimization.
  • Support production localization costs trade off.
  • Propose and implement initiatives relating to raw material changes, supplier changes, technology shifts, etc.
  • Identify and optimize geometry, surface treatments, tooling, and production process costs.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering Teams to identify and implement new technologies, materials, recycled, and green solutions.
  • Ensure cross-project knowledge sharing and consolidation of lessons learned. 
What Qualifications you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in the design, production, or industrialization of mechanical parts for automotive electro-mechanical assemblies; experience with car interior products (German OEMs is preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of plastic and/or metal (aluminum, magnesium) raw materials, including their properties, applications, and integration in automotive electro-mechanical products. Proficiency with displays, including optical bonding, is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical product architecture; proficient in CAD, 2D, and 3D drawings.
  • Familiarity with thermal simulation and related simulation tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of OEM standards and requirements for design verification and product validation.
  • Experience with production tools and processes for plastic and/or metal components, as well as post-production treatments such as graining, painting, and chrome plating.
  • Familiarity with molding equipment, mold maintenance and reworking, as well as metal stamping, die casting, and thixoforming processes.
  • Understanding of material recycling and its impact on CO2 emissions in production processes.
  • Knowledge of cost structures associated with alternative technologies.
  • Data management skills.
  • Proficiency with Catia, Jira and Appian software.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • Willingness to travel to supplier sites and production plants as required.
