Role Description/Purpose
We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Academic Branch Coordinator to join our team at the British Council. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on English language education for both young learners and adults. The successful candidate will provide academic support to teachers within the branch, contributing actively to teacher training and professional development initiatives.

You will be responsible for ensuring that teaching materials, resources, and IT provisions are effectively maintained and aligned with our standards. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work closely with our Academic, Operations, Marketing, and Customer Services teams to foster strong relationships with parents and learners, enhancing the overall educational experience.

As part of your leadership responsibilities, you will line manage up to five teachers, ensuring their performance and development meet corporate expectations. In addition to managerial duties, you will teach up to 12 hours per week and serve as a cover officer, promoting high-quality teaching and effective learning of English across the branch.

This position also supports the broader mission of the British Council, contributing to our cultural relations objectives and helping to build trust and understanding between people in the UK and other countries.

Role Accountabilities
The British Council is seeking an experienced and passionate Academic Branch Coordinator to support the delivery of our global English strategy. This role is ideal for a committed educator who thrives in a collaborative environment and is eager to contribute to the highest standards of English Language Teaching. You will play a key role in enhancing the British Council's reputation as a world authority in ELT through exemplary teaching, ongoing professional development, and the sharing of best practices.

As an Academic Coordinator, you will provide day-to-day academic support to teachers in the branch, assisting during planning times, mentoring less experienced colleagues, and conducting developmental observations. You will also contribute to product and segment inductions for new teachers, ensuring a smooth and informed start to their journey with us.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing the provision of teaching materials such as course books, resource packs, storybooks, toys, puppets, and arts and crafts supplies. You will work closely with teachers and Senior Teachers to identify and implement resources that enhance classroom experiences and support academic development. In addition, you will liaise with Academic, Operations, Marketing, and Customer Services teams to foster strong relationships with learners and their parents, ensuring a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

Maintaining organized classrooms and appropriate displays of student work will be part of your remit, as will providing cover when teachers are unavailable. You will line-manage up to five teachers, conducting lesson observations and performance management meetings in line with corporate standards. The role also includes teaching up to 12 hours per week, planning and delivering high-quality lessons tailored to diverse learner needs, monitoring progress, and promoting learner autonomy.

You will ensure that teaching materials and course-related documents such as parent overviews and pacing schedules are current and accessible. Administrative tasks related to teaching must be completed to specified standards, and you will coordinate various projects based on the centre's needs. Academic support for level testing consultations will also fall under your responsibilities.

Safeguarding is a critical aspect of this role. You will uphold British Council policies and standards in areas including Child Protection, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Anti-bribery, Information Management, and Health and Safety.

Essentials
Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification: Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cambridge CELTA); Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Trinity TESOL; Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
  • Young Learner qualification: Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC); Bachelor of Education; Master of Arts in Teaching English to Young Learners (MA-TEYL).
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Band 8/9.
  • At least 4 years full time post-certificate (i.e. CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL/PGCE) experience.
  • Extensive experience teaching young leaners and / or adults.
  • Proven ability to provide academic support and/or professional development to teachers working with young learners and adults.
  • Proven ability of undertaking teacher training, developmental teacher observations and/or line management for teachers teaching young learners.

Desirables

  • Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cambridge DELTA or Trinity DipTESOL) - Successful candidates without this qualification are expected to obtain in within the duration of this role.

Important Information

  • Location: Bucharest (onsite).
  • Gross monthly salary: starting with 12,393.00 RON (based on qualifications and experience).
  • Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Locally Recruited - Applications are welcomed from candidates currently in this location with a natural right to work. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country, on a permanent basis, as immigration clearance and/or on-going visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided.
  • Contract type: 2 years fixed-term.
  • Contracted hours: Full time - 40 hours per week (12 hours of teaching).
  • Working Hours: The working week will be either Monday to Friday or Tuesday to Saturday in the afternoons and evenings and may vary depending on the schedule.

  • Please note: This position primarily involves teaching young learners. While some adult classes may be included, applicants should have experience with and a genuine interest in working with children and teenagers.
