The secondary English Language Acquisition (ELA) teacher role focuses on building relationships with students on their caseload to best understand and meet the needs of their individual learning profiles within a linguistically diverse and inclusive environment. Our ELA teachers deliver differentiated instruction and implement research-based interventions for effective learning, while monitoring student progress using a variety of student data, including WIDA frameworks, to make informed decisions. This position involves collaboration, co-planning, and co-teaching with mainstream teachers across a variety of content areas to promote inclusive practices, as well as developing Access Arrangements and supporting students through Student Support Team (SST) meetings. The ideal candidate is passionate about concept-based learning and learner agency and is prepared to supervise one co-curricular activity.
This position also includes an advisory role that includes membership on a grade-level team. Advisory teachers support our social-emotional learning program by working with a partner to mentor a homeroom of students, delivering advisory curriculum as part of a focus team, and contributing to community building events.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLSEducation & Certification
- Masters Degree in the field of education or a related field (preferred)
- A degree in an education related field and a current teaching certificate
- ELA or similar certification
Experience
- Experience supporting English language learners as part of a co-teaching team
- Experience with the IB MYP in an international Secondary School or schools with linguistic diversity
- Experience administering WIDA assessments and using WIDA frameworks to inform instruction
- Experience delivering a pastoral / advisory program

- Teach English Language Acquisition, Academic Literacy, and Co-Taught science and humanities courses

- Intentionally plan instructional strategies to be inclusive of all learners and based on a conceptual framework with clear learning outcomes.
- Build safe spaces where each student's needs are met and individuals are empowered to take ownership of learning.
- Provide students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their growth using appropriate and relevant assessment tools designed in partnership.
- Engage with students beyond the written curriculum to include interactions with spaces, programs, and contexts.
- Actively participate in developing and supporting all members of the community.
- Build relationships with students on your caseload to best understand and meet the needs of their learning profiles
- Deliver differentiated instruction and implement research based interventions for effective learning
- Monitor student learning progress using a variety of student data to make informed decisions
- Attend student centered Student Support Team (SST) meetings with parents and colleagues
- Collaborate with teachers and students to create Access Arrangements
- Communicate progress regularly with the team.
- Make recommendations for students referred to and exiting from the ELA program
- Work collaboratively to co-plan and co-teach lessons with mainstream teachers across a variety of content areas to promote inclusive practices
- Attend and participate actively in departmental and divisional professional meetings
- Assume responsibility for meaningful professional growth, including remaining current and informed regarding educational research and best practice
- Integrate technology within lessons to enhance instructional delivery
- Be available to assist students and teachers outside of class time, including the supervision of one co-curricular activity in the academic year
- Support WIDA testing for new students to determine the appropriate level of support
- Perform other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Principal or Support Services Coordinator
