Backend Engineer – Platform

Your role

You will help scale our client-facing APIs by building clean, distributed, and resilient services on modern infrastructure. You'll own APIs from code to prod, understand how to scale distributed data systems like ElasticSearch or Postgres, and enforce engineering best practices across CI/CD, security, and system design. All while operating in a real-world engineering environment: shipping fast, reliably, and responsibly.

What you'll do

• Own the APIs:
  build and operate clean, fast, scalable APIs that power customer-facing features. Ship code that runs reliably in production and is easy to maintain.
• Design for scale & availability:
  architect APIs and services to scale independently, avoid bottlenecks, and meet high-availability targets (99.9%+).
• Code quality & architecture:
  write clean, modular code following modern design patterns. Contribute to establishing and enforcing clean architecture across the team.
• Distributed system design:
  make pragmatic decisions about service boundaries, communication patterns, and data ownership. Ensure systems are resilient to failure.
• CI/CD and SDLC:
  improve and maintain dev workflows. Enforce testing, version control, and release pipelines as default parts of the development lifecycle.
• Security hygiene
  : handle secrets responsibly, use dependency scanning tools, validate inputs, and follow platform security guidelines.
• Monitoring & diagnostics
  : build in logs, metrics, and traces. Ensure services are observable and support fast troubleshooting.
• Team collaboration:
  review PRs, mentor less experienced engineers, and help define engineering standards. Work cross-functionally with data, platform, and product teams.

Your qualifications

• Backend engineering:
  5–10 years of experience. Strong in or Java. You have built and maintained backend APIs in production environments with proper testing, observability, and deployment practices.
• Microservices & scalable systems
  : Experience designing, building, and scaling distributed microservice architectures. You understand independent scaling, service-to-service communication, retries, timeouts, load balancing, and distributed fault isolation (e.g., circuit breakers, bulkheads, failover zones).
• Distributed data systems:
  Solid understanding of distributed databases or search systems such as ElasticSearch, PostgreSQL with replication, or other high-scale data stores. You know how to scale, shard, and monitor distributed data systems under real load.
• Clean architecture & code design:
  You write clean, modular, and maintainable code. You understand domain-driven design, separation of concerns, and principles like SOLID and DRY. Ability to mentor others in clean code practices.
• High availability & reliability:
  You have built systems with 99.9%+ uptime requirements. You think in terms of SLAs, SLOs, and graceful failure. You design systems to handle load spikes, errors, and partial outages without breaking core functionality.
• Kubernetes + Cloud deployments:
  Hands-on experience deploying and operating services on Kubernetes, in both cloud and on-prem / bare-metal environments. You know how to manage secrets, configure readiness probes, set resource limits, etc.
• CI/CD & SDLC best practices:
  You have worked with structured CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, etc). Familiar with responsible development practices like testing (unit/integration), peer reviews, semantic versioning. You understand release strategies (canary, blue/green), and rollback plans.
• Security-minded development:
  You understand responsible engineering practices: secure handling of secrets, basic auth mechanisms, dependency management, and access controls. Not a security expert, but you take these considerations into your normal work. Experience with API gateways.
• Monitoring & observability:
  You implement logging, tracing, and alerting from day one. You understand the difference between "it's deployed" and "it's live and healthy." Experience with Dynatrace or similar systems is a plus.
• Engineering culture driver:
  You will define and enforce standards around testing, reviews, observability, security, and dev practices. Not afraid to refactor or push back on rushed code.
