We are looking for a Staff Engineer with deep expertise in backend technologies and distributed systems to join our Video Collaboration Platform team in Cluj.

You will join a dynamic team driving the evolution of 8x8's AI and Video Conferencing platforms.
This includes ) and our developer oriented Jitsi as a Service. As a core contributor to the open-source Jitsi video collaboration platform, you'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team committed to building cutting-edge, scalable communication tools.
In addition our team is at the forefront of building and integrating AI-powered conversational services that enhance contact center, telephony and video conferencing experiences — from real-time transcription to intelligent meeting insights.
You'll also collaborate across 8x8 to integrate these innovations with other products in our portfolio, helping shape the future of unified communications.
Responsibilities

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product management, design, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions
• Architecture & Development: Design, architect, and implement scalable backend services using Java, TypeScript, and modern cloud-native technologies
• Technical Innovation: Research, prototype, and evaluate new technologies and architectural patterns through Proofs of Concept to address evolving product needs
• Full-Stack Ownership: Own the complete software development lifecycle from initial design through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance in production environments
• Quality Assurance: Ensure high code quality through comprehensive unit testing, integration testing, test automation, and adherence to CI/CD best practices
• Release Management: Lead the deployment and release process for services, ensuring smooth rollouts with zero-downtime strategies
• Mentorship & Growth: Mentor engineers at various levels, conduct code reviews, and foster a culture of continuous learning and best practices adoption
• Community Engagement: Collaborate within a vibrant engineering culture and contribute to internal and open-source communities

Qualifications

• Backend Development: 7+ years of experience with Java, object-oriented programming, and strong design/architectural skills
• Core Technologies: Proficiency with Spring framework (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud), REST APIs
• Cloud & Infrastructure: Experience with AWS services (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Kinesis, SQS), Docker, and Kubernetes
• Database Expertise: Experience with DynamoDB, Redis, and SQL databases
• Distributed Systems: Background in distributed systems and microservices architecture
• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills and ability to design scalable, maintainable solutions
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with Cloudflare, Terraform, and Infrastructure as Code
