About the Role

We're looking for a Technical Lead to join our team developing a cutting-edge digital language learning platform. In this role, you'll act as both a technical leader and solution architect, defining and designing the system architecture for new and existing features. You'll ensure the platform is scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient, while guiding the team toward best engineering practices.

You'll be responsible for making architectural decisions that directly impact how thousands of learners use and interact with our platform every day.

The team

You'll work closely with a Scrum Master and lead a team of 5 full-time developers (specialized in React Native, , AWS, and TypeScript) and 1 full-time QA engineer.

What You'll Do

  • Define and design the technical architecture for core features and modules of the product.
  • Act as a Solution Architect, analyzing requirements, evaluating trade-offs, and proposing scalable solutions.
  • Choose and justify AWS services to support product goals (scalability, performance, reliability, and cost efficiency).
  • Lead and mentor engineers in architectural best practices, clean code, and DevOps standards.
  • Ensure system observability, performance monitoring, and alerting are in place.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and developers to align business needs with technical strategy.
  • Drive continuous improvement in CI/CD pipelines, security, and infrastructure automation.
  • Support the implementation of RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs and backend components using modern frameworks.

What You Bring

  • Strong experience designing and implementing scalable backend architectures using NestJS and TypeScript
  • Proven ability to design and optimize distributed systems capable of handling high concurrency
  • Hands-on experience with core AWS services, including ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito, DynamoDB, and OpenSearch
  • Solid understanding of event-driven and asynchronous architectures (e.g., using SQS, SNS, EventBridge, or message queues)
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation)
  • Experience designing and securing RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs at scale
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation (GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, or similar)
  • Strong focus on observability, monitoring, and performance optimization (CloudWatch, OpenSearch, custom metrics, alerting)
  • Ability to lead design discussions, evaluate trade-offs, and make architecture decisions balancing scalability, reliability, and cost

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with container orchestration using Docker and ECS/Fargate
  • Knowledge of authentication and authorization flows using Cognito or other identity providers
  • Experience integrating search and analytics capabilities using OpenSearch
  • Exposure to frontend integration with modern frameworks (React, )
  • Strong communication and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide engineering teams toward best practices in architecture and DevOps
