Position: Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo)
Job Description:
The SENCO plays a pivotal role in fostering an inclusive learning environment by coordinating support for students with diverse needs. In a high school setting, the SENCO ensures that students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are provided with tailored strategies to maximize their academic achievement, social integration, and overall well-being. The role requires collaboration with teachers, parents, external agencies, and the wider school community, ensuring compliance with legal and policy frameworks governing SEN.

Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Coordination: Lead the development, implementation, and review of the school's SEN policy, ensuring it aligns with national regulations.
- Identification & Assessment: Oversee the process of identifying students with SEND, conducting and coordinating assessments, and maintaining records.
- Individual Support Planning: Develop, review, and monitor individualized Education, health, and care plans (EHCPs) or support plans tailored to each student.
- Curriculum Adaptation: Support teaching staff in creating differentiated lessons and resources to meet diverse learner needs.
- Collaboration: Work closely with subject teachers, form tutors, pastoral staff, and external specialists to support student progress.
- Parental Engagement: Maintain strong communication with parents and caregivers, providing regular updates and involving them in planning and decision-making.
- Staff Training: Organize professional development sessions for staff on SEN best practices, including inclusive teaching strategies and behavior management.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Track the progress of students with SEND, using assessment data to inform targeted interventions and evaluate their effectiveness.
- Resource Management: Ensure that appropriate resources, such as assistive technologies and support staff, are available to meet student needs.
- Safeguarding & Well-being: Promote a safe and welcoming environment that supports emotional and mental well-being of all students.
- Legal & Policy Compliance: Ensure the school meets statutory requirements related to SEND, including documentation, disclosure, and confidentiality protocols.
